Dan was a choral scholar at New College Oxford, where he studied engineering. Concert work ranges from Handel Messiah to Shostakovich Orango, at venues such as the Concertgebouw, Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall. Recordings include Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (Vänskä/Minnesota Orchestra) and a solo CD of Britten, Winter Words. Opera roles include: Peter Quint The Turn of the Screw (Glyndebourne on Tour); Mao Nixon in China (Opera Boston); White Minister Le Grand macabre and Squeak Billy Budd (ENO). Recently he has performed the title role in Joshua, Gastone in La traviata, Worker in La vida breve and Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi for Opera North.
Dan feels that conventions for the way that concerts of classical song are presented and the way that an audience experiences them can be alienating and often get in the way of direct communication.
